Open chat room

I still think there should be an open chat room where we could chat between games. It would bring an important social dimension to the site.
Not sure what the status of this one is... there was a chat room originally, but it was scrapped because it was considered too much work to moderate. I would like to see it return though, for sure.
Nope, nope. Tried it before, several times. Even the pool chats were full of crap. Chess24 is trying it now, and it's the same unusable garbage.
I won't go that way again.
I meant the support of the mockup, which seems to be messaging individual people in real-time instead of sending notes. I'd like that, actually. We already have IRC channels which fulfill the purpose of an 'open' chatroom.

Individual real-time messaging could work on the basis of mutual following in order to prevent spam. Is that an idea that still holds water, or will that suffer as well?
My take on that is that if you want a private chat with someone, you can challenge them to a game. This is a chess site after all.
it does seem like a good idea, but Thibault has a point, people would probably spam the chat and probably also be rude
F_D89 and I would chat frequently by going to our last played game and chatting in the kibitz/player box there. Back when MsCaroKann was around, we'd informally gather in her latest game's kibitz box every night at around the same time. Sometimes we don't want to play a game, or have to open up a game just to have a short conversation, especially if a bunch of people are on your TV and are spectating, hoping for a game with no way of letting them know you just want to chat.

I think there are others who're in this similar situation, and so that's the community push I'm hoping for. This is a chess site, after all, but it does have forums too :)
Private chat *sounds* great, but it's of no use if it's abused.

Make a team? I haven't given a lot of thought into it, just throwing an idea.

Actually, making a team for a chat room sounds like a terrible idea.
Or perhaps a "team chat room".

It'll be an open chat room for the people of that team (not like the team forum), and within that chatroom, the team "leader" (like the team forum) could have moderation powers - like muting and kicking people.

If the "leader" must leave, s/he'll grant temporary moderation abilities to another person in the room (the abilities will be removed if that person leaves the room/signs out).

Such groups can be created by popular support or by asking an admin?

That's my say on it, although I'd find the private chat nice. It's nice to just chat about games or what have you in addition to chatting to challenge someone.

:)
