Chess
What is Chess? Where Chess was developed? What is the History of Chess?

Introduction

Most of the people may play chess just for fun.But there are some people who make CHESS as their career and play it seriously. But they might not know The History of CHESS and Where CHESS was developed. So, today in this blog I am going to tell you about The History of CHESS .

The History of Chess..

Chess was developed in early India around 1500 years ago.Earlier the Ancient name of Chess was chaturaṅga which translates to "four divisions (of the military)": infantry, cavalry, elephantry, and chariotry. And now in India Chess is known as शतरंज(Shatranj) it is a Hindi word. The other name of chaturaṅga/Chess was also called the Arabic Shatranj. The English word CHESS is derived from a French word eschés (it means 'CHECK').In simple language Chess is a two player game played with 16 pieces each ,on a board which has black and white squares(64 squares). Some Important Chess Questions That were probably not answered

Q1.How were the Chess pieces named ?

When we start the game we have 6 different types of pieces they are the:- Pawn,Knight,Bishop,Rook,Queen and the King. The earliest chess pieces from India (the birthplace of chess) were called shah (king), wazir (counsellor or the Queen), fil (bishop), asp (knight), rukh (rook), and piyade (pawn). You must know the meaning of the King,Queen and Knight(Horse) in English. But do you know the meaning of the Rook,Bishop and the Pawn in English?.So the meaning of :-

  • ROOK:- The ROOK is the piece that is placed at the corner of the board in the starting of the game. The Rook was called as the 'rukh' which means a 'chariot' and the word also means 'castle' in Persian and Arabian Dictionaries. As we use the the Rook and the King for castling.
  • PAWN:- Pawn is the smallest and least valuable playing piece. Each player has eight pawns at the start of the game.'Piyade' was the old name of Pawn which means 'foot soldier' .
  • BISHOP:-Each player has 2 BISHOPS in the start.A Bishop can move and capture diagonally. The old name of BISHOP was 'fil' . In Greek the word Bishop means 'overseer' which means a piece with supervisory responsibilities or the ability to jump long square on a board.

Q2.Why White is always allowed to play on the first move ?

This is the one of the common question in every chess player's mind ' Why White is always allowed to play on the first move ? Why not Black?' this is because earlier Black was considered a lucky or a superior colour so to provide equality to all colours, White was always allowed to play on the first move on the Chess board.

Q3.What is the 'First ever Chess game recorded' ?

This is also the one of the common question in every chess player's mind ' What is the 'First ever Chess game recorded ?'. So, the 'First ever Chess game recorded' is played between two Spanish players in 1475.The game lasted for 21 moves. It was played between Francesco di Castellvi and Narciso Vinyoles.Francesco di Castellvi is white and Narciso Vinyoles is black.Francesco di Castellvi wins the 'First ever Chess game recorded' by playing Bf4 (Bishop to f4).

Q4. Why Spanish players played the 'First ever Chess game recorded' ?Why not Indians? (Related to question three)

This question is related to question three. After seeing the game.I also had a doubt 'Why Spanish players played the 'First ever Chess game recorded' ?Why not Indians?'. As Chess was developed in India so Indians should play the 'First Chess game'.So, the reason behind this is the 'First Chess game' might have been played in India but the game was not properly stored in the History.(There is no proper theory for this question)
