Chess IA

would I be allowed to program an IA and make it play against human players in a separate account ?
You may only use a computer in casual games where your opponent agrees to the use of it. Otherwise you will get marked.
Yes, only casual you need approval from each opponent for each game.

Stole this from the ToS that most "delays reading" while signing up, it's very short so here's your second reminder to finish it :) en.lichess.org/terms-of-service

"1. Cheating. This comes in various forms. Cheating is anything that gives you an unfair advantage over a human player, and includes opening books, computer engines, and having a friend help you. You may use these for training, or against Stockfish. This is to keep the game fair. A game of chess is you vs. them, not Rybka at 3000 rating vs. them."
I quite do not understand this "ask for each game" and "otherwise you will get marked". In this case there is nothing wrong with being marked.

Would it not be a good way just to write a mail at the mods and ask for the "computer assisted label" right away before playing any game. Maybe the text could be altered to "This is a chess engine" so it would be not the same dirty thing but with same effect. Only play casual games.

There are hundreds of labeled players on here who did never ask anyone and play all the time with their engine. So why can't he have a label as chess AI and wear it with pride? Would be something I would like to see if honest players/programmers are not confronted with this cheating stuff and instead given this label as a matter of fact instead of being tossed in the same category as people who tried to cheat on others.

This is no big deal technically speaking. It already exists for the evil guys. Make it blue instead of red and give it to the good guys when asked for.

To quote Dr. Stragelove. "It only requires the will to do so."
I like jorjo's idea - I think FICS does this (they have "engine players" who test homebrew engines/modified engines and have a "This is an engine" marker on them). It would be nice to have here too.
I do agree, maybe he could ask for a label. I like your idea of changing the text, but usually players don't check their opponents profile beforehand.
Maybe the players playing the engine could be alerted before hand that they are an engine, then they can choose whether to abort the game or to play.
Lichess has not been optimized for "engine players" (like FICS), for example there is casual players that don't want to play engines; more work is needed to make room for these players...

mods can give it the existing label but I would also advice to name it something to make it obvious an engine is used, and mention it in the profile description
@1

You are always allowed to program, but playing a human without the human knowing that he is playing against an engine is not allowed.

@6

In Cyborg it is a combination of engine and human. I think grassman meant against purely human players.

On the other hand, I am actually in favor for Lichess to provide weak engines that plays like humans, not the weakened Stockfish of course. Perhaps, weak engines with a glicko rating of less than or equal to 1000.
@flugsio
I see your point. If you add it you want to add it perfect.
Major difference to FICS afaik is that they got the (c) and you can exclude em from your seek formulas.

But if the problem is only that some people do not want to play a computer then why are the cheaters allowed to issue casual seeks and join em.

People have to hover the name to find out. They are probably used to do so by now if they want to avoid such players. So a slight change of this label and the first step is done. They would not have the dirty look but maybe even fans who like to play em.

In future it can be thought of a more clear labeling on first sight.
Maybe use the title. Not GM but AI DeepThought. ^^

Maybe disallow them to join games but only issue seeks.

I do not think much more would be required and nobody would be annoyed by it. On the contrary...
