i think that the first time they should only be band for a week second time 2 weeks third time 1 month ETC....
I'm wondering where option E is, like @hx0 .

Lol but really we should think about options that make sense..and can be implemented. You can ban an account..but if you give someone the "plays with assistance" moniker then they'll happily retire the account themselves. For example, I used to go onto a site that had a two-week free trial and, because I didn't want to pay, I'd just walk into the computer room where there were a couple dozen to choose from and start an account when the time ran out. Any university will have a bunch of computer rooms to choose from.
The trouble with someone cheating and banning the IP could mean ostracizing that whole college room's IP and any newcomer who's innocent of all this stuff but just found the Lichess site and discovers that they're preemptively blocked. Or that's what used to happen..I haven't been to college in a while..maybe IP address stuff has gotten more precise.

That's the trouble with bad behavior..it's pernicious and hard to curb without screwing over ordinary people.

Maybe there could be an option where you sign in with your Fide IDs and play..thereby you have a rating and can be matched to similar players..but it doesn't change after a win or loss..you just get practice. And it remains anonymous of course, besides the published rating.

I feel like the best way is for OTB cheating to take a very hard stance and hope that the attitude percolates through to the rest of the population, online included. At least with OTB there is prize money involved so there may be a legitimate case to say cheaters are committing 'fraud'. And though it seems like OTB is already harsh with the no cell phones and no writing helpful messages on your scoresheet (poor Wesley So) it gives very short penalties like two-year or three-year bans to professionals who cheat. Considering how hard it is to catch someone cheating that seems pretty weak.
Just mark them as a cheater, and warn users before they play against them. Or don't allow them to get paired with other players who have not also been marked as a cheater.
Can't believe this thread is still active!
After all, Lichess will decide appropriate penalty and not us.
bruh you just made it active after 6 days ... gladly the 50 post threshold is not far
